Message class: M3 - Material Master
Message number: 637
Message text: Production versions are not required with external procurement
The material has the
<DS:GLOS.procurement_type>procurement type</> <LS>External procurement
</>. You want to create a production version for the material master
record, although production versions are normally useful only for
in-house production. You can create a production version if you want a
Bill of Material (BOM) or if you want the routing to be considered by
MRP. You can define the production version in the
<DS:GLOS.purchasing_info_record>purchasing info record</> , if you use
subcontracting purchasing info records to define the supplier. In all
other cases, the system selects the material's production versions also
for subcontracting.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Check your entries and correct them if necessary.

).- Check the "Basic Data" and "Purchasing" views to ensure that the material is set up correctly for external procurement.
- Ensure that the procurement type is set to "External procurement" (E) and not "Production" (F).
Review Production Version Requirement:
- If the material is indeed meant for external procurement, ensure that the production version is not required. You can do this by checking the "Production" view in the material master.
- If the material should not have a production version, you may need to remove any existing production versions associated with it.
Adjust Configuration:
- If necessary, adjust the configuration settings in the system to ensure that production versions are not required for materials that are set up for external procurement.
- This may involve consulting with your SAP configuration team to ensure that the settings align with your business processes.
Consult Documentation:
- Review SAP documentation or help resources for further guidance on material master settings and production versions.
Testing:
- After making the necessary changes, test the procurement process again to ensure that the error does not reoccur.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
