Message text: Maintain the document in language &
The document cannot be edited because the language you want to edit it
in is not the the original language of the document.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
To avoid this message, you can change the original language of the
document in transaction <ZH>SE61</>. The possible ways to do this depend
on whether the document already exists in the required langauges.
<ZH>The document does not yet exist in the language that is to be the
original language</>
In this case, first of all the document must be created. This is done in
the translation tool (transaction SE63).
The document has to be translated from the current original language
into the new original language. Once it has been translated, the
original language can be changed.
Alternatively, the current document can be deleted and created again
directly in the new original language.
<ZH>The document already exists in the language that is to be the
original language</>
The original language can be changed in the document maintenance
transaction SE61, by editing the document in the language that is to be
the new original language.
Example: You want to change the original language of document XXX from
German to English. So you call transaction SE61 in language English for
document XXX.
When you enter change mode, you are asked if you want to change the
original language. If you answer, "yes", the original language is
changed and the document can be edited.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
