M3563 - Unit of measure & not allowed for the current material

SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: M3 - Material Master

  • Message number: 563

  • Message text: Unit of measure & not allowed for the current material

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

You have specified an alternative unit of measure for the material.
However, this unit of measure is not allowed due to the units of
measure already assigned to the material.
    <ZH>Reason</>
Due to its dimension, the alternative unit of measure specified (&V1&)
can be naturally converted to a unit of measure (&V2&) that is already
assigned to the material. However, this natural conversion is possible
only using an additive constant. It is not possible merely with
    conversion numerator and denominator.
For a material, the alternative units of measure that it is useful to
define are only those that can be converted merely with a conversion
numerator and denominator to all units of measure already assigned to
    the material.

    System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    How to fix this error?

Cancel the entry or specify an allowed unit of measure.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message M3563 - Unit of measure & not allowed for the current material ?

The SAP error message M3563, which states "Unit of measure & not allowed for the current material," typically occurs when there is an issue with the unit of measure (UoM) configuration for a specific material in the system. Here’s a breakdown of the cause, potential solutions, and related information:

    Cause:

    1. Incorrect Unit of Measure Configuration: The unit of measure you are trying to use for the material is not defined or allowed in the material master data.
    2. Material Master Settings: The material may not have the specified unit of measure assigned in its master data.
    3. UoM Conversion Issues: If there are conversion factors defined, they may not be set up correctly, leading to the error.
    4. Transaction Context: The transaction you are trying to perform may not support the specified unit of measure for the material type or the specific operation.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Master Data:

      • Go to the material master record (transaction code MM03).
      • Check the "Basic Data" and "Sales Org. Data" views to ensure that the unit of measure you are trying to use is listed.
      • If the UoM is not listed, you may need to add it or change the UoM to one that is allowed.
    2. Review UoM Settings:

      • Use transaction code CUNI to check the unit of measure settings.
      • Ensure that the UoM is defined correctly and that any necessary conversion factors are set up.
    3. Check UoM in Transaction:

      • Ensure that the transaction you are using supports the UoM you are trying to enter. For example, some transactions may only allow certain UoMs based on the material type or the context of the transaction.
    4. Consult with Configuration Team:

      • If you are unsure about the UoM settings or how to modify them, consult with your SAP configuration team or a functional consultant who specializes in materials management.
    5. Testing:

      • After making changes, test the transaction again to ensure that the error is resolved.

    Related Information:

    • Unit of Measure Types: Understand the different types of units of measure (e.g., base unit, sales unit, purchasing unit) and how they relate to each other.
    • Material Types: Different material types may have different rules regarding units of measure. Ensure that you are aware of the specific rules for the material type you are working with.
    • Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help files for more detailed information on unit of measure configuration and management.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the cause of the M3563 error and implement a solution to resolve it.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
