The SAP error message IM485, which states "Deleting the notification in transaction call not allowed," typically occurs when you attempt to delete a notification that is currently being processed or is locked by another transaction. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when the notification is being edited, or if there are dependencies or references to the notification that prevent its deletion.
Causes:
- Notification in Use: The notification is currently being processed in another session or transaction.
- Status Restrictions: The notification may be in a status that does not allow deletion (e.g., if it has been confirmed or is part of a closed process).
- Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary permissions to delete the notification.
- Dependencies: There may be other objects (like work orders or maintenance plans) that are linked to the notification, preventing its deletion.
Solutions:
- Check for Active Sessions: Ensure that the notification is not open in another session. Close any other sessions that may be using the notification.
- Review Notification Status: Check the status of the notification. If it is in a status that does not allow deletion, you may need to change its status or complete the necessary processes before attempting to delete it.
- Authorization Check: Verify that you have the necessary authorizations to delete notifications. If not, contact your SAP security administrator to obtain the required permissions.
- Check Dependencies: Investigate if there are any linked objects (like work orders) that are preventing the deletion. You may need to delete or modify those objects first.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
