Message text: Change number & exceeds existing change status
You are attempting to shift change numbers. Change statuses may not
"pass" each other because of a shift in the change number's date.
However, change number &V1& overlaps with another change status.
This problem can occur, for example, if an object is processed with
several change numbers and you need to shift numbers for one or
several change numbers.
You created an object on 1/1/1994 and changed it with a change number
for 10/1/1994. This change number should be shifted back to 1/1/1993.
However, this shift fails since the change statuses overlap.
Check the routings effected by the shift.

The SAP error message CP205 ("Change number & exceeds existing change status") typically occurs in the context of change management within SAP, particularly when dealing with change numbers in the context of production planning or engineering change management. This error indicates that the change number you are trying to use is not valid for the current status of the object you are trying to change.
Cause:
- Change Number Status: The change number you are trying to use may have a status that does not allow further changes. For example, if the change number is already completed or locked, you cannot use it to make further modifications.
- Object Status: The object (e.g., material, BOM, routing) you are trying to change may be in a status that does not permit changes with the specified change number.
- Authorization Issues: There may be authorization issues preventing you from using the change number.
- Incorrect Change Number: The change number entered may not be valid or may not correspond to the object you are trying to modify.
Solution:
- Check Change Number Status: Verify the status of the change number you are trying to use. You can do this by navigating to the change number in the relevant transaction (e.g., transaction CC02 for change numbers) and checking its status.
- Review Object Status: Ensure that the object you are trying to change is in a status that allows modifications. You may need to unlock or change the status of the object.
- Use a Valid Change Number: Make sure you are using a valid change number that is appropriate for the changes you want to make. If necessary, create a new change number with the correct status.
- Authorization Check: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to use the change number. If you suspect authorization issues, contact your SAP security administrator.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or your organization's internal guidelines for managing change numbers and statuses.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
