Message text: You cannot limit assets in update mode
In productive archiving, it is not possible to archive only individual
assets. You always have to archive a complete company code.
If individual assets are displayed, you have to carry out archiving
in test mode. However, in that case, no deletions are carried
out.

The SAP error message AA880 ("You cannot limit assets in update mode") typically occurs in the Asset Accounting (FI-AA) module when there is an attempt to limit or restrict an asset while the system is in update mode. This situation usually arises during the execution of certain transactions or processes that involve asset management, such as asset transfers, retirements, or adjustments.
Cause:
- Update Mode: The error indicates that the system is currently in update mode, which means that it is processing transactions that cannot be interrupted or modified. In this mode, certain actions, such as limiting or changing asset values, are not allowed.
- Transaction State: The error may occur if you are trying to perform an operation that requires the asset to be in a different state (e.g., not being processed in a batch job or not being locked by another transaction).
- Configuration Issues: There may be configuration settings in the Asset Accounting module that are not aligned with the current operation you are trying to perform.
Solution:
- Check Transaction Status: Ensure that the transaction you are trying to execute is not currently being processed in update mode. You may need to wait until the current process is completed.
- Review Batch Jobs: If you are running batch jobs that involve asset transactions, check if they are still in progress. You may need to wait for these jobs to finish before attempting to limit the asset.
- Use Correct Transaction Codes: Make sure you are using the appropriate transaction codes for the actions you want to perform. For example, if you are trying to limit an asset, ensure you are using the correct transaction for that purpose.
- Check for Locks: Investigate if there are any locks on the asset that might be preventing the operation. You can use transaction codes like SM12 to check for locks.
- Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on the transaction you are attempting to execute.
- Contact SAP Support: If the issue persists and you cannot identify the cause, consider reaching out to SAP support for assistance. They can provide more detailed insights based on your specific system configuration and transaction history.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
