The SAP error message 25088, "No Workflow has been started for the partial order <&>", typically occurs in the context of SAP's workflow management system when a workflow is expected to be triggered for a partial order, but it has not been initiated. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when processing purchase orders, sales orders, or other types of documents that are subject to workflow approvals.
Causes:
- Workflow Configuration Issues: The workflow may not be properly configured for the specific document type or status.
- Incomplete Document: The order may not meet the criteria required to trigger the workflow (e.g., missing mandatory fields).
- Workflow Activation: The workflow may not be activated in the system or may be inactive for the specific order type.
- Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to start the workflow.
- System Errors: There may be underlying system errors or inconsistencies that prevent the workflow from being triggered.
Solutions:
Check Workflow Configuration:
- Verify that the workflow is correctly configured for the document type in question. This includes checking the workflow definition and ensuring that it is active.
- Use transaction code SWDD (Workflow Builder) to review the workflow settings.
Review Document Status:
- Ensure that the order is complete and meets all necessary criteria for workflow initiation. Check for any missing mandatory fields or statuses that may prevent the workflow from starting.
Activate Workflow:
- If the workflow is not active, you may need to activate it. This can be done in the workflow configuration settings.
Check Authorizations:
- Ensure that the user attempting to initiate the workflow has the necessary authorizations. This can be checked using transaction code SU53 to analyze authorization failures.
System Logs and Traces:
- Check the system logs (transaction SLG1) for any error messages or warnings related to the workflow. This can provide insights into what might be going wrong.
- Use transaction SWI1 to check for any workflow instances that may have failed or are in error status.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
